Excursion 1: SHMU Wind tunnel

  • 5 September 2023, start at 14:00 CEST
  • max. 20 participants (2 groups á 10 participants)
  • excursion duration: ca 60 minutes (25 minutes travel, max. 35 minutes excursion in tunnel) / per group

SHMU uses an aerodynamic tunnel to calibrate air flow speed meters (anemometers). The existing tunnel can simulate air flow speeds in the range of 0.3 to 40 m/s. The used air velocity meters (anemometers) most often work on the principle of rotation or use the principle of ultrasound. A comparison method is used for calibration, whereby the calibrated gauge is compared with standards (thermal, rotary and differential pressure gauges).

Participants will meet at the main entrance of University of Economics Bratislava:

  • 1st group at 14:00 CEST
  • 2nd group at 15:00 CEST.

For this excursion it is recommended that participants bring their passports for a possible control at the entrance to the SHMU building.

Transport will be by minibus and car from the University to SHMU, Jeseniova 17, Bratislava; it takes 20-25 minutes – for free. After the end of the wind tunnel visit SHMU we can offer transport back to University; participants can also use city transport from SHMU to the city centre.

To register, please send a message to ems2023@shmu.sk with the title Wind tunnel; providing your full name will be sufficient.

Places will be assigned on a first come – first serve basis.

Excursion 2: Water flow measurement on Danube

  • 7 September 2023, start at 14:30 CEST
  • max. 30 participants
  • excursion duration ca 60-70 minutes

Water flow measurement will be demonstrated on a SNP bridge across Slovakia's largest river, the Danube River, with ultrasonic ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) device. The outputs of the measurement are computed values of hydraulic characteristics, which are important in describing the hydrological regime of the river throughout the year. The importance of precise data acquisition has been rising over the past few years, and to fulfil the demand, modern measurement devices (as mentioned ADCPs) with updated technique are needed.

Participants will meet at the Most SNP bus station at 14:30 CEST (under the SNP Bridge).

How to get there:

Use the bus No. 88 from Ekonomicka univerzita bus station, direction MOST SNP, buses terminate directly under the SNP Bridge; it takes ca 16 minutes, buses run every 8-10 minutes (if you use bus departure at ca 14:00, 14:10 CEST, you will be there in time).

To register, please send a message to ems2023@shmu.sk with the title Water flow measurement on Danube; providing your full name will be sufficient.

Places will be assigned on a first come – first serve basis.
